View 2 RepliesView RelatedOS X :: External Hard Drive Not Recognized - Unknown Device
Jan 31, 2010Another one of those 'external hard drive not recognized' problems: I am using a Mac Mini. The external LaCie drive is in one of those beautiful boxes designed by a guy named Porsche. It's connected via Fire Wire. I have my iPhoto library stored on it. It was working just fine for the past two days after I first connected it.
Now it does not show on the Desktop. It is identified only as 'Unknown device' in 'About This Mac.' iPhoto doesn't recognize it. I've looked at the other threads on this subject here and have reset the PRAM. Disk Utility recognized it for a while and said the disk was OK. Now Disk Utility does not recognize it at all.
I turned off the drive and turned it back on. That resulted in an alarming series of beeps, almost like somebody was sending the Morse code symbol for 'E' over and over again. I turned the drive off and then on again. Now the light goes on and the drive whirs nicely. I am using System 10.6.2. Or rather, at this point it is using me.
Power Mac G5 :: USB Device Not Recognized?
Dec 30, 2007I have a total of 10 USB devices connected to my G5 Mac, including hubs, printers and scanners. Most behave fine, but one or two cause minor problems. The worst offender is a Sierra Wireless 875U Aircard, which is a wireless broadband modem I got through AT&T. I use it for my Internet connection.
Every time I power up my Mac or bring it out of sleep, it won't recognize the 875U, even though it's plugged directly into the Mac's front panel USB port. I can't even see it on System Profiler. Having it in a different port or going to a hub port doesn't make any difference.
To make it work, I have to unplug it, wait a few seconds and plug it back in. My Mac then recognizes it and it works fine until I shut down the Mac or put it to sleep again. Granted, this is only a nuisance level problem, but it would be nice if the Mac recognized all the ports all the time. I'm running a duel G5 2.0 GHz under Mac OS 10.4.10. I see the exact same problem in my G4 iBook (1.0 GHz) also running Mac OS 10.4.10.

OS X :: Write Whole HD In NTSF - Device Not Recognized
Jul 9, 2010I was attempting to install Windows XP Pro through bootcamp and somehow wrote not only my entire external in NTSF but my whole harddrive. The techs at the Apple Store we able to fix my MacBook and they told me to take it home and preform a reinstall from Time Machine but when I tried that it kept saying 'Device not Reconizable.' I took it back and they found out that somehow I had written my external in NTSF during the XP install (which didn't work anyways). They told me to try 'MacFuse' which will read NTSF files. My question is, is this the route to go? Also will I be able to get my Time Machine backups back and restore my MacBook back to Pre-Windows install?
View 6 RepliesView RelatedPowerPC :: IBook G3 Firewire Device Not Recognized?
Jun 19, 2008I'm attempting to upgrade a family member 800mhz iBook G3 from 10.2 to 10.4 using my old iPod as the install drive. (Restored a DMG, etc) Only problem is that (other than being an ancient computer, I guess) is that said iBook doesn't see the iPod until after OSX loads (white spinny guy).
Tried holding Alt at bootup (not listed), setting it as the default boot device (just skips it and goes right to the HD), and just running it from OSX (reboots, straight back to OSX desktop).
Is there something I'm missing? Does this model G3 not allow detecting boot devices at start up? I'm kind of at a brick wall here. Should I just bite the bullet and do a target disk install?
Software :: CD / DVD Not Recognized - No Burning Device Found
May 11, 2007I have two 15' Powerbook G4's, 1.67GHz, one has a Toshiba 80 GB hard drive (Powerbook 1), another one has a Toshiba 60 GB hard drive (Powerbook 2). Powerbook 1: The super drive on the 80GB hard drive takes CD's/DVD's but does not eject them, or recognize them. In System Profiler the Disc Burning section says 'No burning device was found. If you are using an external device please make sure that it is connected and powered properly'. I cannot boot of this CD drive or anything. Powerbook 2: Now the 60GB Powerbook works flawlessly, even though it has a non-oem Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-845S drive. I had to take the 60GB hd out of Powerbook 2 and install it into Powerbook 1. The darkest thing happened, Powerbook 1's CD drive started working without a problem. Powerbook 2 is now with the 80GB hard drive and without a functional CD drive.
I put the 60GB HD back into Powerbook 2, and the CD drive started working again. I put the 60GB HD into Powerbook 1 and left put it together because it is fully functional. Now I have the Powerbook 2 that still has problems with the cd drive. I have tried using 2-3 other hard drives (they were from windows machines though), still no luck on getting the CD drive to work. If I disconnect the 80GB Hard Drive, then I can boot from the CD drive. I just unplugged the internal hard drive, and attached another Powerbook (this one is 17'), and booted the 17' inch one into firewire mode, then started the Powerbook 2 and booted into the firewire HD. Now I'm looking at the System Profiler, and I'm seeing the disc burner.
My conclusions to this issue: It seems like all of the hard drives, except the 60GB one, can't seem to run along with the cd drive. This is not a motherboard or a CD drive problem, because both of the 15' computers can have everything working, depending on which hard drive is used. I heard that these CD drives have an issue of being setup in Cable Select, instead of Master. I tried using different firmware (I had to plug up the drive to a PC laptop and flashed the firmware with D100 firmware http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2094 )

MacBook Pro :: USB Hard Drive Is Not Recognized On It Running Lion
Mar 21, 2012I have:
- Freecom ToughDrive Pro USB hard drive
- New MBP running Lion 10.7.3Â
When I plug the disk in an USB port in the MBP, the light that indicates operation starts blinking but very lighltly colored and the disk is not recognized by the computer. I have put data on it using iMac Snow Leopard. I have plugged the disk into a MBP running Snow Leopard and it works. I have also tried another Lion (older MBP) and it also works.Â
How come the disk is not mounted or shown in Disk Utility. Can it be a power issue?
I have noticed there a lot of similar posts in the forum and none has been satisfactorily solved. Is this a mayor Lion bug? If yes, how can I downgrade to Snow Leopard?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: External Drive File System No Longer Recognized
May 29, 2012I backed up some movies for the kids onto an external drive (USB without power cord). Now when I plug it in, it does not even show up. If I try to look at it with the disk utility it sayd the file system is not recognised. Last time I accesed the disk was under leopard. Could it be that the change to lion has cut off access now?I do hear the disk start up when it plugs in and I have not seen any strange history with this disk before switching to Lion. (A drive of the same make but bigger and with power cord plus USB still works from before and after Lion). Small disk is Freecom 1TB (pocet size), Large disk is 2TB also Freecom but with powerfeed seperately.

Jan 28, 2010I have a Western Digital Green 2 TB drive attached to on of the two extra SATA II ports on my 2006 Mac Pro. No problems for over three years using several drives on this port. Today the drive suddenly would not mount and I received a 'Drive Not Recognized' warning. In Disk Utility the drive is completely empty without any volume. I also now have a 32-GB 'phantom' volume which used my user name - but does not exist. I turned off the computer and put the drive in an external enclosure, which it mounted without difficulty. I am now updating my backup of the drive and ordered a new 2 TB WD Black drive.
Only a few days ago I had the similar problem with a SD card - missing volume contents, a 'phantom' 32 GB volume. I actually reformted and erased the SD drive, ran Disk Utility to check it, and put it in another computer - using the same SD card reader - and all the files were there!! Nothing was erased at all. Very strange.
Anyone have any idea WTF is going on? It seems like my motherboard drive controllers are getting flaky. Any way to test it? I have all the usual test programs, but nothing has shown up

Software :: Garmin Colorado (navi) Doesn't Appear On Desktop
Aug 12, 2010After correct behaviour during 2 years Garmin Colorado only appears for a short time on the desktop from a MacPro with Snow Leopard 10.6.4 and disappears. Announcing an error: not correct disconnected. act is that the power of the colorado batteries had crashed down, and I didn't realize this in time. Additional Information: the Connect-picture on the Garmin-display stays permanently even when shutting down the MacPro. Correct disconnecting of the Garmin then is impossible. Further use of the Garmin requires disconnecting from the computer, causing new error. Questions: May be possible such behaviour has disrupted the USB-driver or some else software in the OSX or whatever, and what can be the source of the error? On WIN2000Pro same bahaviour: no connect.

MacBook :: PNY USB Drive Not Recognized?
Jun 18, 2012I tried doing a few Google searches to find a resolution to this problem, but nothing that came up seemed to work, so I'm throwing this question out there. I recently bought a 16GB PNY metal attache for my 2011 MacBook Pro (OS X). That computer fails to recognize the drive. Here are a few notes:Â
1. I tested the drive on a windows vista computer, and that computer recognizes the drive. I can read/write from it on that computer.
2. Neither USB port on my apple is faulty; other USB devices function fine via both ports.
3. I have tried several solutions including:
a) Restarting
b) Powering off, unplugging the power cord, waiting 15 seconds, replugging the cord, and booting up the computer
c) Restarting WITH the drive in the port
d) Leaving the drive in for a while to see if it would eventually recognize it (no results)
e) Reformatting the drive to FAT32 to make sure it's possible for my mac to read/write from itÂ

Dec 27, 2006I'm having some troubles with an external enclosure and my sister's new imac. The enclosure I'm using is a Tao Tec 2500 (2.5' drive) IDE --> USB device with the Y-cable. The drive has been formatted to NTFS and has some files on it. As far as I can tell though the version of OSX the new imac is running should support read capability with the file system though. The computer is a latest generation imac (purchased about 12/20/2006) and running a new revision of OSX (about 1.0.4.7 I believe). My problem seems to be the computer simply does not recognize the drive. Disk utility doesn't see it nor the usb manager in system tools. The LED indicator on the drive indicates that it's receiving power and I've tried swapping the usb ports around just to be sure I don't have a bumed port. It simply seems like OSX just doesn't know the drive's there.

Apr 16, 2009I have tried troubleshooting, searching this forum, & googling to no avail. I'm hoping someone smarter than me can figure this out.
Short Version:
Purchased this hard drive:

and purchased this external enclosure:
[URL]
when I plug it into my macbook, PC, or a powerbook, the disk is not recgonized, I can not get Disk Utility to even recognize that the hard drive exists. I thought it may be a bad drive, so I sent it in to Seagate Warrenty, they sent me a new one and I'm still having the same problem. Does anyone know how I can format the drive or any way I can get it to be recognized?
Longer Version:
My powerbook crashed, so I purchased this HD to replace it. I installed the 1st seagate and when i went to install OSX and said select destination drive, there was none there to select. I was able to repair the original HD so I reinstalled it and went to install OSX and it DID show the drive to install it on, so I don't think that it is the computer/motherboard. Then I sent in for the 2nd seagate, tried getting it to work with the external enclosure and installing internally in the powerbook, etc. nothing seemed to work.
I am wanting to install the new drive in the powerbook as the old drive is on its last leg (but currently works). Every thread i have searched for that was similar, there was no solution that I could use.
OS X :: Hard Drive Not Recognized By Computer
Dec 28, 2009I plugged in my hard drive into my Macbook Pro and it wouldn't show up on the desktop. Opened the finder, and it wasn't there either. I went into the disk utility and it was there. So then I thought maybe rebooting the computer would help. Then I plugged it into my friend's Macbook and it showed up no problem. The last time I used it I remember that error appearing where it forces you to shut off the computer. Does that have anything to do with it? I do photography and I have my entire collection on this hard drive, so restoring it is not an option. Like I said, the device was recognized and worked fine on my friend's laptop, just not on mine.
