When you need to install a program as an administrator, you can right-click on the .exe file and select Run as administrator. However, that option isn’t available for MSI packages. We will show you how to add an Install as administrator option for MSI packages.

To add the Install as administrator option to the context menu for MSI packages, right-click on the Start button and select Run from the command menu, if you’re using Windows 8.1. If you’re using Windows 7 or another earlier version, select Run from the Start menu.

NOTE: You can also press the Windows key + R to access the Run dialog box.

Enter “regedit” (without the quotes) in the Open edit box and click OK.

If the User Account Control dialog box displays, click Yes to continue.

NOTE: You may not see this dialog box, depending on your User Account Control settings.

Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTMsi.Packageshell

Right-click on the shell key and select New Key from the popup menu.

The new key is added as a sub-key under shell. Rename it to “runas” (without the quotes).

Right-click on the Default value in the right pane and select Modify from the popup menu.

NOTE: You can also double-click on Default to edit its value.

On the Edit String dialog box, enter “Install as &administrator” (without the quotes) in the Value data edit box and click OK.

Now, you need to add a sub-key to the runas key. Right-click on the runas key and select New Key from the popup menu. Rename the sub-key “command” (without the quotes).

Select the command sub-key and double-click Default in the right pane to edit its value. On the Edit String dialog box, enter the following in the Value data edit box:

msiexec /i “%1”

Click OK.

Close the Registry Editor by selecting Exit from the File menu.

Now, when you right-click on an MSI installation package file, the Install as administrator option is available.

When you select the Install as administrator option, the User Account Control dialog box may display, as shown at the beginning of this article, depending on your UAC settings.

Office is home and business 2016 (32-bit).

Access is just Access 2016 (32-bit) from volume license.

The error message varies depending on which order they're installed but the error is:

Click-to-Run and Windows Installer editions of Office programs don't get along for this version, so you can only have one type installed at a time. With office installed first the problem states windows installer will not install with click-to-run installed.

Office 2016 H&B includes Access, so why are you trying to install a separate Access install?

The link you sent seems to show O365 Home as including Access which is true. If you select the Business tab from the top you'll see Home and Business 2016 doesn't include Access. Thank you for trying though.

Thank you for your response. The link doesn't say how to solve the problem it just says:

'To fix this problem, follow the steps in Uninstall Office 2013, Office 2016, or Office 365 from a Windows computer to remove the Windows Installer version of Office. Then, retry the installation of Office you were doing when you got the error message. Unless you've decided to stay with the Windows Installer version of Office and not install the Office 365 product.'

How do I install the windows version of office? That's the version I want, not this click-to-run version. I can uninstall and reinstall the program but that doesn't stop the error and the 2 products remain incompatible until I can get matching installers.

Just an update. Unfortunately this remains unresolved. We have been unable to installed the software side by side. The fix going forward has been to purchase an additional copy of office in open license format in order to obtain an MSI installer copy of office 2016. I wish the best of luck to anyone else with this problem in future.
