Sigma Serial Numbers Lens

That may mean a much 'later' lens. EXIF information can already record the lens serial number if the lens info is passed to the camera body, which isn't the case except in recent lenses, and even then a Canon lens on a Canon body. Top spin 4 pc download full version. A Sigma lens might not ever pass the necessary info to the body.
I am fairly new to photography but spent an hour or so shooting almost four-hundred macro photos in a local college conservatory; everything from hydrangeas, to begonias and orchids, to succulents. This really extends the range of my Sigma 105mm DG EX HSM macro lens (does not work with my 24-70mm DG EX HSM lens, will not physically attach). It increases the magnification (1.4:1), but also increases the minimum focal distance slightly, which can be nice as you can keep a little more distance between you and your subject. Focal depth is extremely narrow in the macro range, but opens back up once you are a foot or more away from the subject. Focus at long distances is still sharp and you can still maintain a wide depth of field.
It is definitely more difficult to maintain stability at close distances, handheld can be very challenging near the minimal focal range. There are a bunch of affordable options on Amazon for macro focusing rails, but I think a simple monopod will be sufficient as certain shots are easier to get by manually focusing and rocking forward and backwards slightly to get the correct plane of focus.
Hi I just ebayed this lens and I'm struggling to figure out how to use it. I see certain serial numbers are not good. Mine starts with 100 is that a crap copy or am I just needing to be more patient in learning this lens. A good chunck of my photos taken at f6.3 are blurry but the same image at f 8 is better which seems to b the common theme with this lens? Any info is greatly appreciated!
blurry or soft? one will be caused by camera shake, the other due to any zoom being softer to some degree at full reach, full reach and wide open is not optimal.
Pics with full exif would help.

Sorry I deleted them! But I was wide open and at 500 mm! I'll try to get out and take some more and repost!
I am planning to buy an used lens with serial number 1018286, any idea if this too suffers from the softness issues which some sigma 150-500mm lens suffer from.
All of them suffer if you use them at 500 and wide open. Best to shoot at F8 or smaller. I find if I back off bfrom 500 just a bit that it also helps.
I shoot f8 or f9 and spend most of my time at 500 with very good results, but I bought the lens new just a couple of months ago. I heard the latest versions were quite good.
I have a copy with serial 1025XXX and bought it in march 2009. It doesn't autofocus in live view mode with my D7k (works fine with D90). I called to Sigma service and they said there's no firmware update for Sigma 150-500 so I have to buy a new lens. I guess the newer version of Sigma 150-500 (new stabilizer) with 8 digits in the serial number work fine with D7k? Does someone have an older version (7 digits in the serial) which autofocus in live view mode with the D7k? Is it true that there is no firmware update?
Did they say that a new version WOULD work, or are you just assuming that?
Are you using any teleconverters or filters on the lens?
Does it focus in normal AF non-live view) - if yes, then the issue isn't with the lens, but the camera. Think about it - the lens doesn't know whether the camera is in Live View or normal, all it gets is an electrical signal from the camera to tell it to focus.

I'm just guessing, because I haven't found answer to this problem. It focuses normally in normal AF use. Are you sure the problem is with the camera, because it's brand new and the live view autofocus works OK with Nikon 18-105? I read somewhere that the communication protocol between the lens and body might have been changed.
Im just about to buy this lens should I specify that I want the newest one? Im buying it off Amazon, cheapest I could find on there is £688 just wondering now if its old stock thats why its cheaper the firm is Luzern i think.
edit that found one cheaper on simply electrial £629
pekkalilja if the lens auto focuses correctly in one camera mode, but not in another, and the lens only receives electrical inputs from the camera, then the lens is not at fault. If it receives elecrtical inputs then it focuses.
When it fails to focus, that's the time that it's not receiving input from the camera.
..either that, or there's information you're not telling us, such as you only use live view in very low light (when the camera can't AF), or you only use it for close in subjects (if it's closer than the lens's minimum focus, then it can't focus on it).
paulbarrett1 until this poster mentioned new versions of the lens, no one else has. Equally, the original poster asked about quality based on serial number, again, no one has replied with 'yes, certain ranges were bad'. Most of the issues with this lens come from a lack of understanding in how to use it. It's not the best at 500mm wide open. For its price, it's excellent.
But if you are worried about it, then the only solution is to go to a camera shop, try the lens on your camera, and buy the one you test. Yes it will cost you more than some website or other, but at least you can try before you buy.

Yeah understand that, just I remember reading about it somewhere, anyway I have orderd it now and spoke to them on the phone and they assured me that its not old stock and if im not happy then I can return it and have a full refund, Totally understand about what you saying, going to a shop, but when the cheapest shop anywhere near me is £300 more well no contest there is there?
I've tried in same conditions, in sun shine long distance and from tripod indoors in halogen lightning. Normal AF mode works fine, but live view mode with this lens won't. As I press the shutter, the focus ring moves slightly, but it never reaches focus and shutter won't release. Strange indeed. I've read that there are people who has noticed the same.
I have a 7 digit serial number (101xxxx) lens that works fine in view-finder mode, but does not autofocus in live view on a D7K; manual focus in live view gives sharp results. I just got the D7K back from Nikon for some other warranty issues and they supposedly checked the whole focusing system. So my camera should be working correctly. I would think that it is a lens compatibility issue.
Sigma Lens Serial Numbers
I bought lens 10040705 off Ebay. I tried to find it's age from Sigma but they said it was a grey import. I have no problems with it but if anyone has a similar number I would still be interested to find it's age.
I tried my old version lens (7 numbers in serial) also with another D7k body with same results. The Live view autofocus does'nt work with this old version lens. I think we should send post to Sigma that they would make a firmware update.
Here is the info regarding Sigma Autofocus Issues
June 16 (news)--Sigma has announced that three recent telephoto zoom lenses may have problems correctly autofocusing in some cases. Contact your local Sigma service center to obtain information on how to have your lens inspected and corrected (in the US, you'll have to call, as the support bulletin is not yet on the US Web site that I can see). The three lenses are:
50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM with serial numbers between 10633051 and 1097200.
120-400mm f/4.5-5.6 DG OS HSM with serial numbers between 10574001 and 1097200.
150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM with serial numbers between 10674301 and 1097200.

I can not seem to find the serial number on mine, but it works very well.
Just remember that at 500mm you still have to hold it very steady!
Have fun with it!
